Demands of job a factor in OR nurse shortage: employer

A shortage of nurses to work in operating rooms at Vancouver General Hospital is due to long shifts, on top of nurses not completing or passing tests they must pass to work in surgery settings, Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) now says. Anne Harvey, vice-president of employee engagement, says while “slumping certification rates” described in stories last week are one factor for nurse shortages causing hundreds of surgical postponements over the next five months, there are other reasons as well.
