Magnitude 7.0 earthquake hits off the coast of Japan, tsunami warnings issued for its southwest coast

A magnitude 7.0 has hit the Pacific Ocean 159 kilometres off the coast of , prompting warnings, the United States Geological Survey reports/

The quake hit at 5:51 a.m. local time near Makurazaki in the country’s extreme southwest, about 1,400 kilometres from Tokyo. Tsunami warnings stretch along the country’s south west, including the Tanegashima Yakushima region, which experienced a small tsunami in 2011.

The tsunami warnings do not affect the western coast of North America as they are on the other side of Japan from this continent.
