Stock car driver dies during P.E.I. race

, P.E.I. – have released the identity of the man killed in a on Saturday during the of a pro on .

RCMP say Robert Michael Stevens — a 30-year-old resident of Riverview, N.B. — was taking part in a 100-lap competition hosted at the race track, about 15 north of Charlottetown.

Police say Stevens’s car flipped onto its roof during the 98th lap.

The say the driver began removing his own while suspended upside down after the crash, but the effort somehow strangled him, leading to his death.

Police say reasonable safety protocols were followed during the race.
