Two men shot at party in SW Calgary

A terrifying scene early Saturday morning in the city’s southwest, just east of the Shaganappi Pointe Golf Course.

Police were called around 3:30 a.m. to a party at a gym in the 2400 block of 10 Avenue SW, after gunfire erupted outside.

“Some of the guys said they heard fireworks,” says Sheldon Merrick, owner of 8 Weapons Fitness.  He was hosting a private birthday party for a family member at the facility.

“Pretty much a lot of people started showing up that weren’t invited,” says Merrick. “I guess there was a brawl just outside … right away we just kind of got everybody out, everybody panicked.”

Police say two men suffered gunshot wounds and are being treated in hospital; one of the victims is in serious, possibly life-threatening condition. The other man’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Investigators say the scene was chaotic when they arrived. They gathered as many witnesses as they could to be interviewed, and brought in a city bus to hold them.

At this point, police have no suspects.  The investigation is ongoing.
